Who Was Martin Luther King Jr.?
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, was an American Baptist minister and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. He is celebrated for his passionate advocacy for civil rights and equality through nonviolent protest and civil disobedience, influenced by his Christian convictions and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.
Dr. King's leadership was instrumental in the successful protest against bus segregation in Montgomery in 1955 and later as the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). His efforts were crucial in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, among other achievements. Dr. King's commitment to justice and equality culminated in his powerful “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington, an enduring symbol of his dream for a diverse and unified America.
