As a leading creative management firm nestled in the heart of Downtown Denver, our company specializes in website design and graphic design efforts! Our graphic designers are versed in a number of strategies from website design to designing print media for clients, but there is a difference between web design vs graphic design. What is the biggest difference between web design vs graphic design?
What is web design?
As the medium states, “web design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of websites! This includes, but is not limited to, website designing, interface design, UX design and some basic coding!”
A website designer is focused on the overall design goals that the website is interactive, responsive, aesthetically pleasing, follows accessibility guidelines and even more. A website designer is focused on how consumers navigate and interact with the website that is designed and finally coded!
What is graphic design?
As the Interaction Design Foundation states, “graphic design is a craft where professionals create visual content to communicate messages.” Graphic design is an old industry that can be dated back to the Egyptian era with its popularity rising when print media became a popular medium. A graphic designer can more than likely work on Social Media Marketing image, print media, billboards, signs and possibly website design, but not all graphic designers can work on website designs!
Graphic design vs web design
Graphic design and website design often seem to have irrelevant differences in the design world and it is often confused that every graphic designer out there can work on a website design. But in all reality, graphic design is such a broad term that is used in the design industry that there can be graphic designers who do not specialize in website design!
On the other hand, a website designer can not only design effective websites, but generally understands the elements of graphic design and can work on other projects as well! Website design is a niche within the graphic design industry.
While graphic design vs web design have their differences in their overall work, at the end of the day, graphic designers and website designers do worry about the same type of issues just in different ways!
A graphic designer and website designer would both worry about the size of an image, but for different reasons. A website designer would worry about a large image or video on a website because it slows it down, which affects the design. A graphic designer is going to worry about an image that is too large because it might not work on social media!
A graphic designer is going to worry about fonts just like a website designer because it affects a company’s readability and overall branding perception! So, while web design vs graphic design is different on the projects and capabilities for some, in the end, both of these design methods end up worrying about the same issues!
